Senior Technical Designer

Job Summary

PMBA Architects is seeking a detail oriented, responsive, and collaborative Senior Technical Designer who proactively solves design challenges and resolves design issues throughout all phases of a project.

You will be leading the team’s production of drawings to execute and enhance the design intent of a project through successful technical project resolution while working closely with the design team, clients, consultants, and vendors.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the delivery of project documents with design intent and superior technical quality

  • Provide oversight during production; redlining drawings and teaching/training junior team members

  • Lead technical communication and coordination within the project team including clients, vendors, contractors, and consultants

  • Execute and enhance the design intent while overseeing the preparation of the construction documents

  • Determine the requirements and best practice components for systems and practices to meet clients’ needs by performing code research, material and building systems research, laying out program components, and calculation of program and building areas

  • Visits job sites to gather data as needed

  • Direct project coordination meetings for projects and prepares and distributes detailed notes/minutes

  • Model reviews – ensure efficient design strategies are being utilized and constructability details are fully coordinated

  • Collaborates with engineers to ensure project is moving forward and ensuring there is sufficient time for project reviews

  • Manages the production of construction documents for projects of all size and scope

  • Creates detailed plans integrating engineering, electrical, and HVAC considerations; presents plans to clients for review and approval

  • Evaluates substitution requests proposed by consultants or contractors and directs subsequent revisions

  • Modifies new or existing plans as required to meet the clients’ needs

  • Collaborates with contractors and clients to facilitate the building process to meet clients’ specifications including job meetings, RFIs, Bulletins, shop drawing review, etc.

  • Visits project sites as required/needed and participates in construction meetings

  • Determines in general if Work completed by contractor is in accordance with Contract Documents

  • Must have a thorough understanding of how a construction document set of plans is produced

  • Performs quality assurance checks for completeness (format, detailing, content and coordination, accuracy, meeting standards, specifications, and safety/code requirements)

  • Is responsive to clients/contractors

  • Participates in the development of quality control and design standards to accurately complete technical drawings

  • Able to use and develop BIM models

  • Use the accepted office standards as guidelines

  • May have to work closely with building regulations

  • Updates existing design techniques with respect to latest design trends

  • Provide technical support and guidance to team members

  • Mentor and guide others in respect to construction document standards, constructability, and code requirements

  • Active in mentoring Interns and Co-ops

  • Delegate, provide feedback, and follow up on tasks assigned to junior staff

  • Performs other related duties as assigned

 

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills combined with good listening skills

  • Proficiency with Revit and AutoCAD

  • Familiarity with MEP, Civil, and Structural building systems

  • Knowledge of materials and construction techniques

  • Can independently perform a variety of assignments

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or related software

  • Excellent problem-solving and consultation skills

  • Encourages productivity and teamwork

  • Detail-oriented

  • Experience should include strong technical knowledge of producing a coordinated set of construction documents

  • Ability to create technical documents that thoroughly and accurately describe the work to be done

  • Process Oriented – able to understand and consistently follow the steps and sequences of a process to deliver projects on time and budget

  • A ‘get it done’ approach

  • Knowledge of building codes and regulatory standards

  • Must be able to travel to project sites

 

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture or Construction Management preferred

  • Ten or more years of relevant experience  

  • Excellent technical drawing skills

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.

  • Travel to project sites.

  • Comply with safety requirements.
